President Trump talks all the time about “Fake News.” Unfortunately, most people use the term to describe anything that doesn’t agree with their own biases and opinions, including the president.
Trump likes to use scare tactics to rile up his base, talking about how dangerous illegal aliens are, or overinflating the violence caused by protestors. The truth is much more nuanced than angry talking points.
If you want to check to see whether a news story or site is factual, there are a few ways to do it. Check to see if the website has a full “About Us” section. A trustworthy site will list the goals of the site, who founded it, and what their credentials are.
Look to see how they fact check their information. If they include links, follow them back to primary sources whenever possible, like local news sites. You can also look up the founders and funding organizations from a third party.
